What We Believe

Our Vision

Christ United Methodist Church will be a growing community of disciples of Jesus Christ who are transforming the world.

Our Mission

The purpose of Christ United Methodist Church is to bring people to Jesus Christ and into his covenant family, grow together into Christ-like maturity, and equip ourselves for ministry in the Church and for our mission in the world in order to glorify God.

Baptism

As United Methodists, we baptize persons of any age as a once-in-lifetime symbol of God's love and salvation. The experience of professing one's faith in Christ as Savior is made public in baptism, where water is sprinkled head as a sign of God's gracious, life-changing love.

*A child presented for baptism by one or both parents is done so as an affirmation that God's love and gracefulness is available to children as they grow up in a Christian home, with the hope that one day the child will make a profession of faith as a youth or an adult ('confirmation').

*When you make a profession of your faith as a youth or adult, whether through the experience of baptism or a confirmation of your childhood baptism, you become a member of the congregation and the United Methodist Church.

*Persons who have been baptized in other congregations of the United Methodist Church or in other Christian denominations are not "re-baptized."  We accept a transfer of your membership and acknowledge your prior profession of faith.

Communion

Occasionally, we celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion  (Lord's Supper, Eucharist)  during our services.  All persons are welcome to come forward and share in the bread and cup in response to this invitation: "Christ our Lord invites to his table all who love him, who earnestly repent of their sin and seek to live in peace with one another."  Communion is a celebration of the good news we share as the family of Christ, a thanksgiving for the presence of the risen Christ and the salvation of God.  It is an expression of our desire to be "one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory, and we feast at his heavenly banquet."

United Methodists

United Methodists are a diverse people, with congregations in the U.S., Europe, Africa, Russia, and other countries.  While we share many things in common with other Christian denominations, our heritage is rooted in the movement begun by John Wesley, a pastor in England in the 1700's.

A summary of United Methodist beliefs is found in our Book of Discipline, which is published every four years by the General Conference of The United Methodist Church.  United Methodist people may express a variety of beliefs and opinions, but we have generally been united by observing the guidelines and principles expressed in the Book of Discipline.  Our worship traditions are outlined in The United Methodist Hymnal and Book of Worship, though there is great diversity across the Church.  Our mission is to "make disciples of Jesus Christ" and to serve people through the ministries we sponsor locally, regionally and globally with United Methodists and others.  Info ink: 'What We Believe'
